Diwali Plans Shattered By Tragedy

A family in Nadi will not celebrate Diwali after the death of their father, Shalend Narayan, 45, of Togomasi Settlement fell to his death last Friday while working at a construction site.

His grieving widow, Suman Lata, said it had been hard to accept her husband’s death.

“My husband had made plans to celebrate Diwali with friends and families and he had been working hard so that we could all gather and share the happiness of this festive season,” Ms Lata said.

“Now, we have to call off the celebration, but what is more saddening, is that I can still hear my husband’s voice. We have lost the sole breadwinner in our family and he was a very caring and loving person.”

Ms Lata said the post-mortem examination report concluded that her husband’s ribs, shoulders, backbone and the back of his head were severely damaged.

“My daughter is coming from New Zealand and we are preparing for his funeral on Wednesday (today).”
She said they would now depend on their youngest son.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the deceased fell from a height of three metres onto a concrete floor.
