Students of Hilton Special School in Suva were yesterday asked to take precautionary measures while celebrating Diwali today.

Permanent Secretary for Education Basundra Kumar made this plea while at the school’s Diwali celebration in Suva yesterday.

“With many homes filled with oil lamps, candles and lights, be mindful of the additional fire risks to the homes,” Mrs Basundra said.

“Having fireworks at home can be great fun as long as they are used safely.”

The students were joined by students of Deenbandhu Primary School, Nehru Primary School and Indira Ghandi Memorial School.

Mesake Baulo, a teacher, said students from other mainstream schools were invited to celebrate the day with their students to have a feel of celebrating with children with special needs.

“It provides awareness of the other students because in the future these very students with special needs will be joining mainstream schools as well,” Mr Baulo said.

Mrs Kumar also reminded the students that Diwali was a time for people of different races came together as one.

“Diwali is a time for embracing/ accepting and understanding each other and thinking of the poor and the less fortunate.”
