Children at the Treasure House in Nadi were paid a surprise visit from the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, on Wednesday night.

Treasure House administrator Ulamila Powell expressed her gratitude to the Minister for her timely visit.

“You can tell from all the laughter and joy among these children when they met with the Minister and other staff from the Ministry,” Ms Powell said.

“These children don’t have families and during functions like Diwali they also look forward for gifts and happiness with their family.”

Ms Powell thanked the Minister for her visit and for her assurances of the Ministry’s support in developing the children’s lives.

Ms Akbar was delighted to be present during the special event and has assured the residents that they were well looked after.

“I am delighted to be here this evening and as you know that this year the Government has given new portfolio for children and as such, the children in residential homes are responsibility of the Ministry,” Ms Akbar said.

“I would like to thank all the staff for looking after these children, these are special group of children;  and the Ministry will do everything in its powers to ensure that they are well looked after.”

Currently there are 28 children at the home.

The youngest is a month-old baby and oldest is 15 years old.
