A ‘Sheltered Food Bank’ will open in Suva next week to provide help to the poor.

A $10,000 agreement was signed between the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation and the St Vincent de Paul.

The food bank initiative has been set up to help the residential homes and the people under social welfare assistance together with all those associated with non-governmental organisations and other groups.

“This signing marks a new horizon with the society’s perspective to assist with poverty alleviation,” Permanent Secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta said.

“There is going to be a warehouse of all food except for frozen food and this would be distributed to all in need.”

Dr Koroivueta said this food bank would be a first major one in the Pacific, however, there were a few food banks that some of the NGOs here in Fiji had to assist the poorest of the poor.

“We will have the same kind in the West and the North with the central one about to open next week,” he said.

“We have consulted food-based industries that have given us the nod to assist with the food products that would be distributed to the people under our care.”

President of St Vincent de Paul Ben Hazelman said it was an honour for the society to be given a task to assist the ministry with the initiative to provide food for the poor and needy.

“This food bank will assist the existing network and this is something which would be universal as it does not see race, religion or colour, but it would assist the poor and those in need,” Mr Hazelman said.

“This is all for a good cause and this is a supplementary initiative where we would be working together with the ministry to meet its task.”
