Pillay Keeps Diwali Cup

Lautoka Golf Club vice-captain, Surend Pillay has successfully defended the Western Customs Brokers Airport-sponsored Diwali Cup yesterday.

Pillay carded an impressive one under par 48.5 finishing ahead of his challengers Lawrence Benjamin, overseas golfer Paula Cavu and Raymond Singh.

“I feel happy to have defended the title twice in a row and hopefully I defend the title again next year,” Pillay said.
It was a close chase for the title when Benjamin carded 49, Cavu at 50 and Singh finishing with 51.
He was in great form after winning the Pacific Agencies Fiji Ltd-sponsored 18-stroke Western Open Championship at Lautoka last Saturday.

“The competition was stiff but I managed to pull it off and this was a build-up for the Lautoka Open Golf Championship to be staged this Saturday,” Pillay stressed.

In the beginners grade, upcoming golfer and Lautoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry administrator Salim Mohammed finished first while Richard Eyre and Aklesh Shiu Ram and Dr Ganesh Chandra settled for second, third and fourth respectively.

The longest drive was recorded by veteran golfer and Lautoka Golf Club captain James Krishna on the sixth hole while nearest to the pin (NTP) was won by Aklesh Shiu Ram on the ninth hole.

Meanwhile, Lautoka Golf Club chairman of trustees, Raymond Singh thanked Fiji National University vice-chancellor Dr Ganesh Chandra for the university’s support towards the development of this sport and the club.
