Commission Helps Flying Fijians

The Vodafone Flying Fijians received a timely boost from the Fiji National Sports Commission for the Northern Tour.
Commission chairman Peter Mazey presented a cheque of $324, 836 to the Fiji Rugby Union yesterday.

“Rugby is very important to the economy of the country,”Mazey said.

“So, while we keep losing more Fijians to countries like Sri Lanka recently, it’s good for the country.

“We’re very pleased to support the Northern Tour again especially this year as we’re playing Wales, France and the USA.

“So this is really a preparation grant for us winning the World Cup next year. It’s time we got the top prize and all the money that goes with it too. Next year there is to be more preparation work and the Commission will again be there to assist. So there are great times ahead for sports in Fiji.”

FRU chief executive officer Radrodro Tabualevu applauded the assistance.

“We are grateful and indebted to our sponsors, as well as the Fiji National Sports Commission in their support of rugby in Fiji,”he said.

Tabualevu said the money would go towards allowances for the overseas-based players as they joined the tour going on leave without pay from their clubs and also covered player insurance for the tour.
