A family of four living along the Tabucola Cane Access Road in Labasa lost all their belongings in a fire early Thursday morning – few hours after Diwali.

Home owner, Jitendra Naicker, 44, said all his hard work in building their three-bedroom home was reduced to ashes in the fire.

“I struggled to build the 42 by 36 feet house which was also fully furnished,” Mr Naicker said.

“It is a very bad Diwali for me because my father passed away three months ago, therefore was customary for us not to celebrate.

“We had no decoration put up. No one lit any firecracker and I am confused on how the fire started. I woke up when my niece felt the heat and I saw our house on fire, so I grabbed my phone and ran outside with my wife and three-month-old baby and my niece.”

Damage is estimated at $8000.

Meanwhile, National Fire Authority chief executive officer John O’Connor urged members of the public to report any electrical failures in their homes.

Investigations to determine the cause of the fire are continuing.
