Denzal Smith Aims High

New to the scene, Great White Sharks Swimming Club, Denzal Smith has so far won the only medals for his club in the BSP Short Course

Age Group Nationals at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre yesterday.

The 12-year-old from Lautoka won two bronze medals in the 50 metres and 100m breaststroke events.
Smith, who has only been swimming for less than six months, aims to represent Fiji.

“I only started swimming this year and just love it,” he said.

“I want to train hard because I want to be a Fiji rep.”

His dad, Wallace Smith, had encouraged his son to pursue swimming.

“I’m very proud of him and what he has achieved for his club already,” he said.

“This is something I want him to continue because I know he will do really well in it. All he has to learn is to perfect his techniques and train more.

“Just getting here to the nationals is a big achievement for us. We have not got a proper pool like they have here in Suva to train in but we still have a long way to go.”
