Private Inoke Gonedua, 25, was on cloud nine after scooping two major awards at the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces passing-out parade yesterday.

A former paymaster at the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests, Mr Gonedua was among the 199 recruits who graduated after a 12-week intensive training at the Forces Training Group (FTG) in Nasinu, Suva.

He was awarded the Best Rifle Shot and the Best Machine Gun awards.

“First of all I feel proud and to receive the two awards is an honour and a privilege; I thank the Lord for these two awards and also my family for their support during the 12 weeks training,” Mr Gonedua said.

“It was through dedication and setting your goals right that you’ll be able to attain what you are striving for.”

Although he did not expect the two awards, Mr Gonedua said like any other recruit, he gave it his best shot and the result turned out positive for him.

He said he decided to join the military because he believed the institution provided a place for discipline and transforming attitudes.

“The training was a really good experience; it moulds a new person in you, similar to what the Bible tries to preach; to change individuals from a bad person to a good person. The military has done that; it has changed us.”
