The Pacific Islands Farmers Organisation Network (PIFON) has signed a $400,000 agreement with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) at the Holiday Inn in Suva yesterday.

The funds would be given over two years to December, 2016.

The agreement was facilitated by the SPC’s Land Resource Division’s intra- Agriculture Policy Programme.

SPC’s deputy director general, Fekita Utoikamanu said the agreement would support their shared objectives of addressing poverty alleviation through promoting agricultural livelihoods.

“And increasing the contribution of the agriculture and forestry sectors to national economic growth in the Pacific region,” Ms Utoikamanu said.

PIFON board member, Andrew McGregor said the funding was really important because it could help them fund activities they had planned.

“So we have a strategic plan for the organisation network that was created in 2013 involving seven Pacific island countries and 20 members and we need funding for what we plan to do,” Mr Mcgregor said.

“Our main focus is on exchanges, especially technique exchanges, providing advice on aspects to do with sustainable agriculture. It’s important because it helps us fund these activities.”
