Ministers Visit West Farmers

The Minister for Agriculture, Inia Seruiratu, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Joeli Cawaki and Agriculture and Rural and Maritime staff this week visited farmers in the Western Division.

This was part of their efforts to improve crop and livestock productivity and to explore and identify opportunities and potentials for further agriculture development.

On Monday the ministers visited potato and cattle farmer, Mohammed Faizal at Sovi Bay, Sigatoka. Mr Faizal was awarded the Best Farmer of the Year in the Western Division for his high production and yield and hard work.

They also visited:

– Tian Xing, an Asian commercial vegetable farmer supplying to our local markets,

– Pushkar’s vegetable farm that supplies to hotels,

– the Lomawai Nursery where seeds are produced,

– Bobby Naidu’s boar goat which is imported from New Zealand,

– Halal Best Bird farm which breeds poultry and sells chicken on the local market.

Mr Seruiratu joined the delegation later.

Mr Cawaki continued with the visits and visited the mushroom project at Legalega Research Station in Nadi. They also visited the Naisoso Floodgate, Fantasy Island Gate; some drainage canals maintained by the ministry’s Land, Water Resource Management (LWRM) division.

They visited the Nakovacake Vegetable Development project at Narewa, the Devesh Nursery, Sant Kumar Nursery and the Land, Water Resource Management (LWRM) Division’s dam at Namosi River.
