The Fiji National Sports Commission(FNSC), has donated $40,000 to Cricket Fiji for their International Cricket Council’s (ICC) East-Asia Pacific (EAP) region Twenty20 World Cup and World Cricket League Qualifiers next month.

Cricket Fiji’s senior men’s team departs today for a five week pre-tournament development tour and training camp in Australia.

Cricket Fiji general manager Inoke Lesuma said the tour will be beneficial for the upcoming tournaments and the funds provided by the FNSC will assist them greatly.

“We are very much thankful for this $40,000 grant which we will help us in a lot of ways.

“It’s a very long tour for us, we have 30 games in 32 days and it will be tough but we are very much looking forward to it,” Lesuma said.

“We have a budget of about $140K on this tour and the funding by the Commission will help us with airfares and meal allowance for the players.”

He said that development is important and they want to keep the standard high for upcoming cricketers as well.

“This will be a trip to maximise our development work that we have been doing, development is the beginning of everything which is so important,” he said.

“We are making sure that we are looking after them (players). This is the first time after 20 years that Cricket Fiji is going on a development tour, it will be beneficial not only for the players going but those who will come after them and learn from them.”

Meanwhile, FNSC chairman Peter Mazey is pleased with the growth of the sport.
