Fight Night A Hit In Levuka

The Amateur Boxing Association of Fiji (ABAF) has selected a training squad for the 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.
This was after a successful Fight Night at the Eli-Peceli Hall in Levuka last Saturday.
The clash was between boxers from Suva and members of the Levuka Boxing Club.
ABAF official Marika Yalimaiwai made special mention of Jese Midranalagi and Rusiate Pe outstanding performances in the 91kg category.
“The competition went really well and all the fighters all put on a really good display,”he said. “We’ve a lot gold medal prospects and with all the hard work the boxers have been putting in, things are looking well for the Pacific Games.
“We’re still working to lift the profile and participation of female boxers because we need the numbers. There is a lot of interest and a lot of talent just waiting to be discovered.
“Ovalau were great hosts and had a lot of talent to offer as well so we’re going to continue working to help them develop and grow as an association. We want to thank the local community for supporting us, including PAFCO and MH Levuka for their support.”
Yalimaiwai highlighted the current objective of the association to secure a Boxing House to host all competitions.
“We really need our own Boxing House now so that we can have a venue to actually call our own. A lot of minor sports have their own facilities but they don’t seem to produce the winning product.
“We’re the only sport apart from judo to win gold at the Commonwealth Games.
“And we believe we can produce more if we got more support and if we had our own facility to train and hold our competitions in.
“But, that aside we’re going to continue working towards our goals and preparing for the Pacific Games among other events on our calendar. We’re already planning to hold our next event in Taveuni to promote the sport there and we’re confident about it.”
