The Fiji National Provident Fund marked the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a cancer awareness walks on Saturday.

Minister for Health, Jone Usamate, reiterated on the importance of regular check-ups and exercise to participants at My Suva Picnic Park. The walk was in support of the Pinktober month on the awareness of breast cancer in women.

Mr Usamate called on everyone to do regular exercise and eat right for a better health.

FNPF human resources manager Jonetani Tonawai said they were trying to raise awareness for the Fiji Cancer Society.

“FNPF supports health and wellbeing through its policies and encourages women to take regular tests,” Mr Tonawai said.

“We are supporting the Fiji Cancer Society in their efforts to raise awareness on cancer and the importance of prevention.”

About 120 people from the FNPF headquarters turned up for the event with a Ministry of Health team doing check-ups.

“We had blood pressure and sugar level tests done by the Ministry of Health,” Mr Tonawai said.

“We would be hosting a morning tea on Friday where all the funds collected through the walks would go to the Fiji Cancer Society.

“We call on the people that prevention is better than cure; cancer has no respect for anyone so please get regular checks.”

Staff of the Lautoka and Labasa branch also had their walk on Saturday at Shirley Park, Lautoka and Saint Mary’s Primary School in Labasa. The events were supported by Australian Embassy and Coca- Cola.
