The development of children is one of the priorities of the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar.

Ms Akbar has been visiting residential homes in the Western Division last week and took time out to celebrate Diwali with the children under their care.

“We will ensure that the children who are under our care are well looked after and my ministry will do everything within its powers to ensure that they become responsible citizens,” Ms Akbar said.

“With a positive attitude, we will move forward in taking their lives to greater heights.

“This ministry will continue to strengthen its partnership with non-governmental organisations to reach out to as many underprivileged children in our society.”

The ministry has embarked on a more compassionate way of addressing issues concerning underprivileged children regardless of their circumstances. She urged children under their care attending school to start dreaming and dream big.

“We believe that education is the greatest weapon that is going to shape your lives,” Ms Akbar said.

“Dream big, start dreaming about what you want to become and work hard towards achieving that dream.

“Values like discipline, respect for each other will take you closer towards your dream.”

There are currently 158 children under State care and are being looked after at the nine residential homes in Fiji.

The homes are being paid a care and protection allowance of $100 per month for each child placed by Government in their care.
