The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, has applauded the efforts of the Fiji Cancer Society in promoting breast cancer awareness.

This comes as hundreds of people converged at Gujarati Ground in Ba dressed in pink last Saturday to mark Pinktober, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“While this month is known as Pinktober, for the Fiji Cancer Society they know the risk is still far from over,” Ms Akbar said.

“We must acknowledge the Fiji Cancer Society and all stakeholders in promoting breast cancer awareness through morning tea and fundraisers during the month of October.

However, she said, there was a need to keep awareness programmes going throughout the year. Ms Akbar assured the hundreds that gathered the Government was committed to providing the best health services for all Fijians.

“Our Government will extend the opening hours at health centres, hospitals and pharmacies to provide more convenient services and also to ensure essential drugs remain under price control,” Ms Akbar said.

She further thanked and urged the participants to show love and support for those women diagnosed with breast cancer.
