The Reserve Bank of Fiji and the Fijian Government are now in the process of discussing with the World Bank on the possibilities of project loans.

Governor Barry Whiteside, who recently returned from the USA following meeting with multinational institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF, confirmed this.

“With the IMF, it was not a problem because we were still getting technical assistance from them in the last 6 to 7 years,” he said.

“But with the World Bank, it is the idea of getting project loans again.”

Fiji’s re-engagement with such multinational institutions has begun following the general elections in September.

“So this re-engagement, everyone was excited, not only our delegation but the technical officials from both IMF and World Bank,” Mr Whiteside said.

Reaction to elections

Mr Whiteside the various countries he spoke to were all excited about elections having been held in Fiji.

“Not only the large countries, but our smaller developing countries in the Pacific,” he said.

“The ones that I spoke to were all happy about elections. The check off given by the international observer group was welcomed. So all in all, very well received.”
