Burenitu Village in the interior of Serua will host a mountain running event organised by the Jet Runners Club of Nadi on Saturday.

This was after students from Burenitu Village Primary School participated during the club’s annual fun run in July.

“This event is also in line with the growing interest of the athletes wishing to represent Fiji in future,” said Jet Runners Club president, Abhinesh Kumar.

Eleven trophies were scooped by athletes from the school.

“These athletes have the potential but just need the nurturing and the guidance,” he said.

Kumar has hosted a clinic at the village.

“The village is located 18 kilometres from Pacific Harbour and 18km in from the main highway but the villagers are very interested in sports.

“The support of the school teachers will help me in the successful execution of the event.

“There is no electricity or tap water here and they drink river water which could be one of the reasons for their fast hydration and ability to run longer.

Next month the club will organise a 400m run for primary school students in which two disabled kids will also participate.
