Livia Likusiga was shocked to find her daughter dead on a footpath at Drauniivi Village in Rakiraki on Sunday morning.

Ms Likusiga, 57, who was preparing to go fishing at 6am did not imagine finding Raijeli Laveti motionless.

“My two grandsons had come rushing home telling me that they saw Raijeli, I asked them if she was on the phone and they said no. So I had assumed that maybe she was drunk,” she said.

“On our way to the river we came past her.  I saw her lying there and from the looks of it I knew that something was wrong, Raijeli was lying there like a dog that was being poisoned so I ran to our neighbour for assistance.”

Twenty-four-year-old Raijeli, a single mother of three-year-old Jone Nabaisila, was working in the pine industry in Nananu, along the Rakiraki road.

She was last seen by her parents on Saturday morning when she left for town with one of her relatives.

“I saw her on Saturday morning when she left for town and that was the last time I saw her till early Sunday morning,” said the teary mother.

She said that she was not aware of her daughter being pregnant.

“I had no idea of her being pregnant or not; I did not think she was but I have been hearing people from the village talk about it,” Ms Likusiga said.

The worried mum said that she was very close to Raijeli’s three-year-old son.

“When she would come home Jone would cry for her if she had gone out to our neighbours or to the shop,” said teary Ms Likusiga.

Raijeli was last seen with a relative who accompanied her to Tavua Town to meet a man on Saturday afternoon. She allegedly informed her relative that the guy they were to meet was to provide a herbal medicine for abortion.

According to a Police report, the suspect is  in custody. It is alleged that he had given the victim a bottle containing a brown liquid mixture.
