The Fiji Police Force took the early lead in the 2014 ANZ Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing after winning six of the nine fights at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva last night.

Vilimoni Drotini won the 60kg category over Sikeli Rarawa while  Lote Tikivagone and Wate Tuwai of Army proved too strong for policeman Samu Rokobuli and Viliame Roko in the 69kg grade.

Policeman Joe Ravudi Jnr, defeated Setareki Tuinaceva in the first 75kg match and his teammate Pauliasi Suka also outpointed soldier Metui Rarawa.

Atonia Racika and Dauvunau Ligavatu continued the winning streak defeating Tevita Bewarawa and Ilai Waqamailau in the 81kg category. Ilaitia Suguturaga rode on that success, defeating Sakiusa Masisiwa in the first 91kg heavyweight fight of the evening.

Mitieli Vakacegu of Army however would have the final say in the ring, bringing back some glory with the final win of the evening after defeating policeman Manasa Rakatoni.

Police team manager Assistant Superintendent Sainivalati Makutu was pleased with his boys’ performance and looked forward to the semifinal and final rounds scheduled for today and tomorrow.

“The boys have done really well so far and six out of nine is a really good start. We’ve just been working really hard and training as best as we can and competing frequently in the Saturday’s Fight Night has paid off.

“It’s really good considering this is the first time for most of them to compete in the Sukuna Bowl so I’m pleased. Now we’re just looking forward to the semifinals and finals.”

Attending last night’s event were Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, and Republic of Fiji Military Forces commander Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga and  Commissioner of Police Bernardus Groenewald. The 2014 ANZ Sukuna Bowl continues today and will culminate with the rugby match on Friday afternoon at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
