An early morning head-on collision near the Hideaway Resort and Spa on the Coral Coast claimed the life of a 26-year old resort employee yesterday.

Eye-witness Mohammed Imran said four passengers in a private vehicle were on their way to Sigatoka when the incident occurred.

“From the looks of it, it seemed that the private vehicle driver had lost control and went on to the opposite lane meeting a head-on collision with a ten-wheeler truck,” he said.

The incident happened at around 6.30am.

It is believed a woman passenger in the private vehicle died on the spot because of the impact and excessive loss of blood. According to Mr Imran, the victim was stuck in the front seat of the car.

Mr Imran pointed out the loose gravel on the site of the accident, a possible cause of the loss of control of the private car.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro also confirmed these accident details yesterday.

“The victim was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 34-year old with two others when it veered to the right side of the road and collided on to the front left portion of a truck driven by a 52-year old of Lomolomo, Lautoka,” Ms Naisoro said.

“It is alleged the driver of the private vehicle lost control as a result of speeding and loose gravel on a portion of the road that was still under construction.”

She said the driver of the private vehicle is yet to be questioned as he is admitted at the Sigatoka Hospital. Investigations continue.

In response, Director Traffic Control Unit, Senior Superintendent of Police Mahesh Mishra has urged motorists to take precautions and take heed of road works at the various locations around the country.
