On Track For record Visitor Arrivals This Year

Fiji received 678,527 visitors in the twelve months to September 2014. This is a 2.5 per cent increase on the 661,787 visitors in the previous twelve-month period.

Tourism Fiji acting chief executive Ken Freer said strong performances have been shown by a number of markets, especially New Zealand and China.

“However it is worth noting that a 2.4 per cent increase from Australia is an additional 8,000 passengers,” he said.

“This demonstrates the importance of this market and showing how a small fluctuation in Australia’s performance can have a exponential affect on our overall results.”

Speaking at the Tourism Fiji industry day 2014 at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa in Natadola, Mr Freer said more exhaustive data was needed to prepare industry stakeholders.

“However in the first nine months of 2014, visitor arrivals are up 4.2 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2013,” he said.

“Based on this performance and current trends, Tourism Fiji predicts 2014 visitor arrivals to be around 680,000.”
This will be the largest number of visitor arrivals and is slightly more than the Reserve Bank’s September estimate of 675,428 visitorarrivals for 2014.
Mr Freer said for the industry to be better prepared, more detailed data was needed, which is what they are focussing on now.
