Celebrated New Zealand chef and judge Morna McGregor is impressed with the array of dishes Fijian chefs have whipped up for the Moffat Salon Culinaire 2014.

Ms McGregor has been a professional judge for over 10 years now. She is one of the five international judges who are in the country to finalise the winners for this year’s event.

The competition is currently held together with Fiji Hotel and Tourism Associaion’s Vodafone HOTEC trade show 2014 at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa.

Ms McGregor said: “I would be very proud if I were a Fijian chef of this standard. Because the frame of references is limited for the Fijians to outside world, they have really captured a lot of international standard from around the world.

“It’s heartening to see how many people have competed today and at the same time, it is a very scary thing.

“By competing, it is such a big development on the learning journey and these guys can only get better, and better and better.”

Ms McGregor said competition is so intense that everyone is already a winner for her.

“These guys should take judges comments and results as a big pat on their back and maybe not everybody would get a medal but you should not give up because, if you give up, you learn nothing.”

For Fijian chefs, a big drawback according to Ms McGregor is research.

“Research is a really important thing. The internet is full of pictures and ideas which can be used. But, probably everyone gets so tied up with the hard work they are doing that it leaves little time for research.”
