The days of trade unions making threats and using confrontational tactics are behind us, says the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations.

Jioji Konrote says the way forward now for Government in workplaces is to improve on dialogue between all stakeholders to resolve any disputes.

Mr Konrote will be calling a meeting with the stakeholders to discuss ways and means of making good work relationships in all companies.

He pointed out the difficulties faced in the past when confrontational approaches by trade union representatives achieved very little when demands were not met.

“Some they use threats as a weapon to get things happen,” he said.

He said concerns had to be addressed so that it was a win-win situation with both parties gaining, he said.

This, he said, would be the way forward as it would ensure that there “is always a good working relationship existing for all.”

In work places there were many issues within and these had to be addressed, he said.

Current legislation protects Fijian workers and employers, he pointed out.

“There are even ways and means to be followed to prevent threats and confrontation,”  he said.

His first priority will be to provide the workers a good and enjoyable work environment.

“I went with the Prime Minister and attended the FijiFirst thanksgiving service in Labasa.  I took time to visit the Labasa and Savusavu office,” he said.

Mr Konrote said the Look North Policy was the blueprint for Government’s development plans in Savusavu, Labasa and other parts of the Northern Division.

He also plans to visit the Western Division.
