The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, will improve its services, especially to people in remote rural areas.

Ms Akbar revealed this during a public consultation at Nadakuni Village in Naitasiri on Thursday.

Ms Akbar said social welfare recipients in those areas should not worry about getting access to their monthly allowance anymore.

She said during their public consultations, they had received reports of recipients facing transportation problems to get to urban centres to withdraw their allowances.

“I am aware that there are clients, particularly senior citizens, receiving allowances in rural communities who face difficulties in having to spend money on transport to travel to towns to withdraw their monthly allowances,” Ms Akbar said.

“The Ministry will work on a programme so that social welfare officers will come to your village to make the payments, so that you won’t be burdened with transport expenses incurred in accessing the social welfare allowances.

he said the ministry would improve its service to the poor and underprivileged.

“Social welfare officers have been informed that they need be more compassionate when dealing with the clients, and greater emphasis will be placed on serving senior citizens and persons living with disabilities.”

Ms Akbar headed a team comprising of Permanent Secretary, Dr Josefa Koroivueta and director for Social Welfare, Rupeni Fatiaki, to the village on Thursday.
