the annual gathering of Fiji’s top human resource managers and members of the Fiji Human Resources Institute has impressed the International Labour Organisation Specialist on Decent Work Strategies, Satoshi Sasaki.

Mr Sasaki was the guest speaker on day one of the eighth annual convention held at Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa, Denarau, Nadi.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun after the event, Mr Sasaki said it was very encouraging to note that the Institute and its members took the initiative to meet annually and share their knowledge on human resource issues at their respective companies.

“In companies around the globe, people have to think about what the HR issues are relevant- gender issues, race, disabilities.

“I see Government agencies putting focus on gender equality in this country.

“I also note that organisations dealing with people living with disabilities also working hard to ensure there is no discrimination of people with disabilities at work places.”

Mr Sasaki said Fiji and individual organisations were taking necessary steps to see to it that discrimination of any form was not building within the structures.

“What is particularly important is that the management issues in Fiji are taken up to the highest level of the companies,” he said.

Global issue

Mr Sasaki said globally, employment of people with HIV/AIDS has become an issue and the ILO was keeping a watch on this.

“The ILO is trying to promote and raise awareness on how you can work with people living HIV/AIDS and how these workers can be included,” he said.

“This again has to have a top approach from management. There has to be a lot of education on this issue.”

About the conference, which concludes today, Mr Sasaki said: “I am very impressed that so many HR managers and top managers get together.

“It is great that the FHRI organises this annual event and to see people come out and participate in it is very encouraging.”
