Successful HOTEC Comes To An End

A successful Vodafone HOTEC 2014 trade show came to an end last night at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau Island in Nadi.

Fiji Airways managing director and chief executive officer Stefan Pichler who officially closed the event. He took the opportunity to drive the tourism stakeholders towards meeting the goals of pushing the boundaries of tourism.

Mr Pichler also shared the latest update on negotiations of leasing two additions to their fleets- a 737 and an A330.

He said the Vodafone HOTEC 2014 was a great event in getting the industry stakeholders together, adding that Fijian tourism industry was still very fragmented.

“What we need is that we get together more often in such events, discuss more issues, agree on common objectives and common goals and work towards it. This one, as well as industry day are events which gets the industry together,” he said.

“The focus for everyone now needs to be on achieving the Fijian Tourism Development Plan that Government and stakeholders are working to finalise.”

He said Government’s goal of achieving $1.93billion in tourist spending in Fiji was realistic. Part of this plan would also include getting in more people into the country through the national carrier.

“We are right now at the edge of negotiating the deal about leasing a 737 and another A330. We will have to go and get the Board’s approval for that,” Mr Pichler said.

“As it looks like, the next A330 aircraft will join our fleet by the end of next year which is a little bit earlier than what we planned in our five year plan. As planned, we will have a 737 coming in next April, right before the high peak season.

“We will probably have new destinations in Australia and New Zealand and this will open up more markets for Fiji.”

Mr Pichler said Fiji needs a Fijian Tourism Forum to incorporate all stakeholders in the industry.

HOTEC was organised by Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association.
