The Minister for Education, Dr Mahendra Reddy, wants to revive the National Research Council to help local research.

“The council was established in 2009 and over the past five years it has just remained a name,” Dr Reddy said.

“The council will ensure that duplication of research, resources and funds are avoided.”

He said the council would be an umbrella body to work on research priorities of Government and some research funding would be provided.

“I challenge the three universities, USP, Fiji National University and University of Fiji, to engage more in basic research.”

Dr Reddy said it was very important to conduct local academic research.

“I’m quite concerned about the local universities not undertaking or contributing to problem solving research in the country.

He has challenged local academics to always question, test and push the existing body of knowledge.

“The Government now relies more on local research results as a basis for some of its key policies and we want them to work with all the research institutions.”
