Fisheries officers from 10 island countries including the Caribbean and Pacific have successfully completed a training course for Fisheries Extension Officers.

“You are guardians of the sea and you all play a crucial role in educating and encouraging sustainable management and conservation of the ecosystem that so many people depend on,” Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) Fiji Office resident representative Shumon Yoshiara said at the closing of the Fisheries Extension Officers training course at their office in Suva last Friday.

Mr Yoshiara said the officers had made long-lasting friendships, gained knowledge on conservation of coastal ecosystem and learnt a lot about the technical aspects of fishing methods through practical training.

“We are very pleased with the success and implementation of the training programme. The practical knowledge and techniques they’ve would help them in their roles as fisheries extension officers back home,” he said.

The training was organised by JICA in partnership with the Okinawa Environment Club of Japan. It was held from September 8 to October 31, 2014.
