A big amateur boxing battle is going to take place at the National Fitness Centre in Suva on Saturday night.

It was confirmed yesterday that a seven-member boxing team from Levuka will be part of the programme along with teams from Lautoka and Ba.

“It’s going to be a big night as boxers are hoping to represent Fiji at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea next year,” said official Marika Yalimaiwai.

He pointed out that a legal wrangle involving Boxing Commission of Fiji, FASANOC and the former amateur boxing office bearers need ed resolving if Fiji was to participate in PNG.

“I’m leaving that to the experts to deal with but the Boxing Commission of Fiji has been organising, all the amateur boxing programmes done around the country so far. All I could say the boxers have been doing their part but it’s the decision-makers who have to do theirs now.”

Yalimaiwai said amateur boxing was the first sport to get Fiji a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

“It was in 1982 and even rugby 7s have not won Fiji a gold medal at the Commonwealth. I strongly believe amateur boxing can get us that elusive gold medal in the Olympic Games.”

He pointed out that a team from Taveuni had also declared their interest to come over for a competition in Suva.

“The interest is there in the country but again I’m calling on the officials to come together and resolve the issue. No one is the winner here or bigger than the sport; we’ve got to think of our boys the majority of whom are students but are training hard wanting to do their country proud in the international games,” he said.

Yalimaiwai said the weigh-in would be at the National Fitness Centre from 7am-9am on Saturday while the competition would start at 7pm.
