Nabukavesi 1 clinched the top prize at the inaugural USP Mini 7s tournament after beating Covenant Brothers 22-21 in a thrilling final at Laucala Campus grounds in Suva last Saturday.

Covenant Brothers had led 21-19 with just 20 seconds to go before they were penalised and Nabukavesi converted the penalty for the one-point win.

Tournament organiser Apenisa Vodo hailed the tournament as a success having provided a creative outlet for rugby players with the fifteens season now over.

“The aim of the tournament was to give new teams the chance to take part and also give game time to players that have just finished from 15s rugby,” he said.

“We are planning to stage a big tournament in January next year where we would increase the prizemoney that would attract more teams. All the teams that participated on Saturday showed wonderful 7s rugby which Fijians are well known for, and Nabukavesi 1, who stood out in the competition, showed pace, power and above all the fittest team in the tournament.”

Seasoned 7s clubs like Dritabua, Lomaiviti and Kaite also participated in the tournament.
