Murder! Mociu Found Guilty

Sailasa Mociu, 44, was convicted by the High Court in Suva yesterday on one count of murder.

High Court judge Justice Salesi Temo concurred with the three assessor’s unanimous guilty opinion. Mociu had allegedly stabbed his wife, Kasaia Veiseikonabou in Naisaumua Village, Tailevu, then pushed her into a creek on January 9, 2013.

In summing up the case, Justice Temo said the burden was on the Prosecution to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

He said during the trial the doctor who examined Mociu had stated that the injuries on his body were not consistent with Police assault as he had claimed.

Justice Temo said in the caution interview, Mociu had voluntarily given evidence where he answered in one of the question that his ‘intention was to stab,’ the deceased.

Justice Temo said he went through the evidence where Mociu agreed he had stabbed the deceased twice, on the right arm and shoulder.

He also said that the evidence from the pathologist stated that the victim died of shock, excessive loss of blood and the severing of an artery on the right shoulder close to the neck because of repeated stabbing.

Justice Temo would be sentencing Mociu today.
