Deal Going Ahead

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Lau Province and East Sepik Province from Papua New Guinea will go ahead today.

The Fiji Sun confirmed this last night. There were earlier plans for the presence of the Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare to attend the signing but now it’s otherwise.

The provinces had planned on signing the agreement after their political relationship was established years ago between Fiji’s former prime minister, the late Tui Nayau, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and former Papua New Guinea prime minister, Sir Michael Somare.

This friendship was renewed earlier this week.

Yatu Lau corporate relationship services manager Tomi Finau said the MOU would look at areas of mutual interest to provinces like commerce, tourism, culture, technical and human resource and social development to name a few.

“Yesterday’s (Wednesday) joint meeting session allowed each province to share and understand each other’s aspirations, issues and needs. Share ideas and discuss areas of co-operation,” Mr Finau said.

The signing will be held at the Yatu Lau Company Limited head office in Suva.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the Lau Provincial Council and the Yatu Lau Company Limited will be visiting the province of East Sepik in Papua New Guinea (PNG) in February next year.

Mr Finau, who is also a co-ordinator of the East Sepik delegation now in Fiji, confirmed this.

The chairman of the Yatu Lau Provincial Council, Ilisoni Taoba, said the two provinces were just trying to strengthen a relationship that started 30 years ago.
