Past Inductees Weigh In

Rugby icon Pio Bosco Tikoisuva and Olympic swimmer Sharon Pickering Smith reflected on what they sacrificed to be inducted in the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame with the annual event to be held later this month at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay

Tikoisuva, who was inducted in 2002 alongside fellow golf icon Vijay Singh, stressed the importance of keeping one’s eyes on the prize and focus on the sport instead of hall of fame status.

“They shouldn’t put the hall of fame as the main priority in their minds,”Tikoisuva said.

“Concentrate instead on every game in front of you and put in your best performance. That is how you will be able to get the best possible performance and result out of the game.

“Sometimes when you look at these kinds of targets too early, you forget to look directly ahead of you. It’s like climbing a ladder; you have to take it one step at a time. Concentrate on the next step you take instead of something so far ahead.

“Especially for rugby, when you focus on your game whether it’s club or provincial level, you’ll attain the best outcome. When you do this, people will notice you and everything else will fall into place. So keep your head in the right place.”

Inducted in 2007 alongside athletics powerhouse Albert Miller, Sharon Smith said it all came down to discipline and commitment, which she credited as her secret to success.

“It really comes down to plain hard work,”:. Nothing comes easy and you just have to put in the time if you want good results. You have to listen to your coaches and trust them, which I did and I know, enabled me to achieve a lot.

“A lot of the kids nowadays are natural swimmers but you still need to train properly to make sure you are fit enough and keep your health and train smart so that you don’t succumb to injuries. These are things I know helped me throughout my career.”

The 2014 Fiji Sports Hall of Fame and Fiji Olympic Order dinner in partnership with BSP is scheduled to be held on November 21 at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay where Vodafone Fiji 7s head coach Ben Ryan will be chief guest.
