PNG Corrections Here To Learn

The Deputy Commissioner of Corrections Service of Papua New Guinea, Stephen Pokanis, says they have a lot to learn from the Fiji Corrections Service.

A team from the Corrections Service of PNG, led by the Minister for Corrections, Jim Samatab, is in the country for a three-day mission to learn more from corrections services here.

On Wednesday at the FCS headquarters, in Walu Bay, Suva, senior FCS officers presented to the visiting delegation all activities and programmes carried out by Fiji’s Corrections Service.

Mr Pokanis said that they were truly grateful for the opportunity to visit the FCS and explore together ways and means of assisting each other in achieving much more.

“We have a lot to learn from the FCS and I am sure that after signing a memorandum of understanding later during our trip, we will be able to assist each other in terms of corrections development,” he said.

“There is a lot to learn from FCS especially in terms of the rehabilitation of those incarcerated as well as the physical setup of infrastructure.

“Our Fiji counterparts have developed and set high standards that we can also follow and I am sure that we will work well together.”

The signing of the MOU between the two parties would see them engage in staff development, staff training, staff exchange and secondment programmes as well as sharing of best practices and lessons learned.

The official delegation would also visit the commercial enterprise units based at the Naboro Corrections Centre and attend the launching of the Yellow Ribbon Programme in Valelevu tomorrow.
