Residents Live In Fear After Alleged Rapes

Residents of Nauluvatu Settlement in Suva are living in fear in the wake of a series  of alleged rapes in the area.

One of the residents, Samuela Naulu, said this had been a sad week. It was a frightening experience for the whole settlement, he added. He said they only hoped that the perpetrators were caught and punished as soon as possible.

Another resident who wished to be anonymous said they were terrified with the experience.

“We all live together as a family in this settlement and we are still shocked from this horrific incident when we heard that young girls were allegedly raped on the same day.”

Fiji Police Force spokesperson, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri, said they had apprehended a 21-year-old suspect in relation to two alleged attacks on children.

“The man is alleged to have taken a five- year-old girl out of her home and raped her in bushes nearby early on Monday morning,” Mr Sokomuri said.

He said the suspect allegedly entered the house by removing louvres from a window.

The same morning, Mr Sokomuri said, the suspect allegedly went into another house.

“The suspect was disturbed while allegedly trying to rape an eight-year-old girl in her bedroom,” he said.

He said the suspect was being questioned at the Samabula Police Station.

Some residents claimed there were four rape attempts not two. But only two were reported, they said.

“We have spoken to the families of the other two girls and they have told us that their daughters were raped on Monday.”

That account could not be verified by the Police.
