Service Provider Proves It Can Do It

Having been selected the winner for the Best Microfinance Service Provider team can only be described as success due to strong bonding.
Fiji Council of Social Services Microfinance Unit fared well over the more established South Pacific Business Development institution which took the first runner up prize.

Microfinance Unit manager, Lavenia Baro said it went to show the level of commitment the staff had for its growing portfolio.

“To us it’s a milestone,” Ms Baro said.

“I think the growth of FCOSS started in 2006. That was when we really moved from strength to strength and learning from our previous year’s experience.”

And as Ms Baro discussed, it wasn’t done overnight.

“Most of the things we do are merely test and trial. We faced a lot of challenges and constraints I would say.

“As of even now, our main challenge is lack of resources.
“The success behind this institution is we have a strong bond. We’re committed to delivering this microfinance service to the grassroot level people, those who are economically weak.”
Fiji Council of Social Services Microfinance Unit started in 2000.

“It was a Government initiative in the beginning meaning we were receiving grant until 2010.

“In the first year when we first started it was between $200,000-$300,000 annually but over the years it decreased because as providers we’re supposed to work towards sustaining ourselves.”

But in 2010 that’s when we achieved where we reached breakeven.

The division boasts a market portfolio of just over $1 million but is growing, Ms Baro added.
