Focus On Violence Against Disabled Women: Naidu

While there has been a lot of focus on violence against women most people are unaware of violence against women and girls with disabilities, says Jyotika Naidu.

The 33-year-old was representing the Nadi Disabled Organisation at the Pacific Disability Forum’s four-day-workshop in Suva yesterday.

With the theme, ‘Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls with Disabilities in Fiji’, Ms Naidu said the workshop aimed to strengthen the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities.

“This workshop has really helped us because a lot of women and children suffer in silence because they do not know what to do and where to go,” Ms Naidu said.

She said they had learned about the different kinds of abuse and now they knew where to go to when they needed help.

“It is very important that women and girls have access to the important services in order to help eliminate violence.”
Ms Naidu said it was very important for every individual to know that their rights were protected.

“Women and girls with disabilities at times experience more discrimination and this need to stop.”
She said they wanted to ensure that women and girls with disabilities were able to live free from violence, exploitation and abuse.

The workshop, held in collaboration with the Fiji Disabled People’s Federation, ended yesterday.
