New Era For Melanesians: Nath

Assistant Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Vijay Nath said yesterday’s Levuka celebrations marked a new era for Melanesian descendants in Fiji.

As they commemorated 150 years since their ancestors first arrived, Mr Nath said.

“My Government has provided you space and the right to your culture, tradition and languages under the Constitution.”

“But it is you as individuals and as Melanesians to stand up, awake and arise to a new day and a new way in reviving your cultural and traditional identity as Melanesian citizens of Fiji.

“My Government is also committed to assist you in whatever ways to help you revive your culture, tradition and languages or your identity which you have lost through your stay in Fiji. We will ensure to work with the various MSG member governments to address the issues you are facing not only in Fiji, to assist you.”

He said the three-day event re-wrote Fiji’s history in remembering the arrival of the Melanesians and also some Polynesian labourers some 150 years ago and at the same time to celebrate the recognition of their existence in Fiji under the 2013 Constitution.

He said records showed that some of their ancestors, who arrived early during the first part of the Blackbirding era, were tricked and stolen.
The Government from Day one in 2006 had set out its goal’s to take Fiji to another level with our slogan “A Better Fiji for All”, he said.

“A Fiji society that is fair and just with equality and dignity of all citizens, A Fiji that respects the diverse cultural, religious and philosophical beliefs; with unity among people driven by a common purpose and citizenship, good and just governance; sustainable economic growth and social and economic justice for all.”
