New Meters Installed, Water Bills Right Now

The Water Authority of Fiji’s (WAF) general manager customer services, Fane Vave, says close to 19,000 new water meters are already installed with another 7000 scheduled for next year.

She said the authority was undergoing a major WAF meter replacement programme. Since installation some customers have experienced higher water bills.

“For many this will be the first time that they have received accurate readings because of the new meters and a true picture of their water usage,” Mrs Vave said.

“Although there may be an increase in a customer’s bill, it is based on the WAF standard charge of 15 cents per 1000 litres, one of the lowest in the world.”

Mrs Vave said those who experience a substantial spike in their bills should check around their compound for water leaks.

“The meter replacement programme is part of the overall WAF strategy of upgrading its systems. Many of the meters now being replaced are over 50 years old.

“This programme is important for it will reduce billing errors that arise from the current estimated billing system that WAF uses. Because of this, WAF loses revenue from what it calls ‘non-revenue water’ or water usage that does not reflect in their customers’ bills because of the faulty meters.”

She said the meter replacement programme was also essential for WAF as it would improve the quality of data collected on Fiji’s water consumption. It will also strengthen the authority’s work in managing Fiji’s national water demand.

“This is an important step taken by WAF to improve our service coverage and ensure efficient and accurate billing all over Fiji,” she said.
The programme will continue for the next three years.
