NGOs, Govt Will Work Together

Fiji’s NGOs Coalition on Human Rights welcomes the commitment made by the Government to work with NGOs and civil society organisations (CSOs). They made their commitment at a United Nations organised Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva.

Also present at the review was the CSO/NGO coalition delegation comprised of Citizens Constitutional Forum’s Reverend Akuila Yabaki and Sina Mario, Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre’s (FWCC) Vandhna Narayan and Fiji Women’s Right Movement’s (FWRM) Michelle Reddy.

In a press conference yesterday, FWCC co-ordinator and Fiji’s NGOs Coalition on Human Rights chair, Shamima Ali, said Fiji however had not accepted a recommendation to establish a constitutional commission or review the Constitution.
FWRM former executive director, Virisila Buadromo, said they were willing to work with the Government and engage with them in whichever way they could.

She said the next State mid-term report was due on March 31, 2015 and they are urging the Government to take positive steps by that date in carrying out the recommendations.
