The BLK-sponsored Nadroga Rugby Union shared with players $110,000 for winning the 2014 Skipper Cup and the HFC Bank Farebrother Challenge.
This was confirmed by the NRU president Tiko Matawalu during the victory celebrations at Cuvu Village in Sigatoka yesterday.

“The union has shared a total of $110,000 prizemoney with players from the competitions won,” Matawalu said.
The NRU in the 2014 season secured $40,000 from the Skipper Cup competition and $40,000 from the HFC Bank Farebrother Challenge with the union topping it up with a $30,000 bonus for a successful season.

“Throughout the season the NRU secured two wins in the Skipper Cup in the Premier grade and the Under-20 grade which was a historic win for us.”

But Matawalu says this success came with a bigger price to enjoy.

“We believe that success does not come easy. It demands hard work, teamwork and a lot of sacrifice starting from the management and down to the players.

He says this was the underlying factor for the successful season and the support from the vanua and lotu (church) to seek blessings.

“We look around us and there is no team and no other union has achieved what we have achieved,” he said.
The side remained undefeated playing a total of 21 matches during the 2014 season and are optimistic of keeping their form in 2015.

However, this will be a challenge as we approach the 2015 Rugby World Cup fever.
“Next year will be a short year for us. It is a Rugby World Cup year and the season will kick off early and we will have games week in and week out.

“This will give us less time to recover but if we can do it in 2014, I believe we have the resources to do it again.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Fiji 7s rep Apisalome Waqatabu scooped two awards for Player of the Year in the Farebrother Challenge and Player of the Year.

The side celebrated with a victory march though Sigatoka Town and visited the Sigatoka Town Council before making their way to Cuvu Village.

Matawalu thanked all the support coming from sponsors.
Other awards: Player of the Year U16 – Nemia Uluimalolo; Best official- Kavekini Nalaga; best try- Ratunaisa Vatuinaruku; player of the year Skipper Cup- Eroni Vasiteri; Coach of the Year- Esala Nauga.
