Women have a lot of roles to play – as a wife, a mother, planner, manager, organiser and more.

One can imagine the stress of it all when a woman is tasked with the responsibilities of taking care of the home, kids, extended family – on top of having a professional career.

Keeping up with the daily schedules at home and work is something Labasa mother, Chetna Chauhan is well versed with.

The 35-year-old reputable business entrepreneur shares her experiences as a mother with our readers today.

Mrs Chauhan says juggling her roles to providing the best for her family has always been her priority.

A beautician by profession who is always very busy, Mrs Chauhan does her grocery shopping fortnightly.

Mrs Chauhan is a familiar face around Labasa Town and she commends this to the Festival of the Friendly North Carnival in which she became the first Lady contestant holder in 2012.

The mother to two boys looks after her family and mother, acknowledging the support of her husband who is also a business entrepreneur.

GROCERY SHOPPING & MARKETING

Making wise choices while shopping is always the ultimate goal for Mrs Chauhan who works six days a week.

“It is all about budgeting wisely.

“I would take time out and a shopping list of course to make sure that I buy everything on the list for a fortnight’s ration.

“I love cooking so I buy a lot of ingredients to prepare a variety of Indian dishes.

“After buying food staples such as flour, rice, spices and an endless list of other groceries from the supermarkets, then I go to the market,” Mrs Chauhan said.

Mrs Chauhan said she prefers to buy fruits and vegetables at the market because she finds it much fresher, cheaper and also because of her support to help farmers by buying their produce.

She added that buying seasoned fruits and vegetables is also important.

BUDGETING AND ADVICE

Apart from making sure that everything is on the shopping list, Mrs Chauhan advices shoppers on multiple shop visits.

“A shopping list allows shoppers to buy only the necessary stuff because if not we would end up wasting time and money doing impulse buying.

“Always have a shopping list and make sure to check for the prices in every supermarket to see which supermarket provides the best price for quality products,” she said.

“A shopper always goes for the better price option,” she added.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE

Mrs Chauhan is originally from India and moved to Fiji with her family when she was just 10.

Her family resided in Suva where she spent most of her childhood days before getting married and moving to Labasa.

Her origin is one of the reasons that she is so passionate about food and cooking – all the traditional meals taught by her mother from generations before.

“I prepare mostly vegetarian dishes because I love eating it and it is also a healthier option, especially for my kids,” Mrs Chauhan said.

Hence, Mrs Chauhan believes in shopping wisely to cater for her family of five, especially for her children who are still in primary school.
