In a bid to recognise the efforts of rural women, the Federation of Rural Women hosted 15 women rural designers to an awards night to showcase their different clothing designs.

Co-ordinator Jojo Whippy said the women were recipients of sewing machines that were donated countrywide by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

“We are a charitable trust now, so we are running on our own. This awards night is to recognise the women for what they are doing with their sewing machines and how much they have utilised them,” Mr Whippy said.

“It is also a way forward to bring these rural women into the commercial market and fashion industry to enable them get fixed incomes.”

Leba Volau, 41, and Losalini Ratoto, 59, from Ba were among the 15 women who showcased their designs.
Mrs Volau said the night served as a platform for rural women to showcase their designs and gain marketable access for their sewing products.

She also commended the Ministry of Women for its initiative of providing sewing machines to rural women saying that it had benefited them a lot.

“My husband stays home and the sewing machine that was given to me has assisted our family a lot. I am able to sew clothes and sell them and earn some money to provide for our family,” she said.

Mrs Ratoto commended the Federation of Rural Women for its vision for improving the lives of rural women by recognising them through their sewing talents.

Veena Singh, 47, came all the way from Savusavu to showcase her designs at the awards night. She said the night was a way of improving her sewing skills because she was able to get a glimpse of the different designs that were showcased by the 15 women that took part.
