Association Works With Ports Terminal

The Fiji Ship Owners Agency Association is regularly meeting with the Ports Terminal Limited team looking at ways it can assist in ensuring increased levels of productivity at our ports.
Association chairman, Craig Strong said, they are considering even the small initiatives which would be able to assist Ports Terminal Ltd in any way.

His comments follow the congestion experienced at the Port of Suva two weeks ago where 13 vessels arrived in a week-long period.
This then led to congestion at the port which was something experienced after 10 months at the port.

One of the suggestions by Mr Strong was importers should be encouraged to clear their cargo on the day of the arrival rather than the third day of free storage.

This had been something which was highlighted by Ports Terminal Limited chief operating officer, Hasthika Bandara Dela, in response to the recent congestion situation which had made it worse.

Mr Dela said the port container yard was severely congested because whatever containers they had cleared from these vessels, were not cleared by the consignees.

“But maybe about 70 per cent of the consignees wait till the last day to clear their containers. So it causes backlog and congestion,” he said.

A cost for companies
Mr Strong stressed: “Congestion at ports substantially increases operating costs for shipping companies.
“Having ships at anchor when they should be either undergoing operations or enroute to their next port of call has a substantial commercial impact on the cost structure of the business.”
“The issue comes down to berth availability and the availability and functionality of the operations equipment.”
Vessels
Twenty seven vessels  is being handled by Ports Terminal Limited on a monthly basis.
