Rika Leads Commemoration

Former Commissioner Eastern Netani Rika was the chief guest at the Remembrance Day commemoration at Levuka Town yesterday.
The event was attended by members of the security forces, friends and families of late ex-servicemen.

“At 11am on the eleventh of November, 1918, the guns of western front fell silent after more than four  years of war.

“In November, the Germans called for an armistice [a ceasefire] and they accepted the Allied terms of unconditional surrender,” Mr Rika told the gathering yesterday.

“The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month became universally associated with the remembrance of those who died,” .

The service was attended by serving and former servicemen like Lieutenant-Colonel Ratu Etueni Caucau, the Returned Soldiers and Ex-Servicemen Association, association members from across Lomaiviti Group, Levuka Town Council members, school children and family members.

“Remembrance Day is a day for all to reflect on the sacrifices made by those brave soldiers fighting in all conflicts and  those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Mr Rika said.
