Seventy-two-year-old Savitiri Devi said her last goodbye to her husband, Anand Naicker as he left home for Nadi Hospital. He failed to return.

“I went with my husband and dropped him off at the Nadi Hospital.

“I was heading to Lautoka to visit one of my relatives when I returned to Nadi Hospital to find him he was gone.

“We thought he had taken the lead home, but when reached home he was not there,” she said.

Ms Devi lives with her son, Salendra Naicker, 44, at Savusavu, Momi. He said his father was feeling sick and had gone to hospital.

“He said to go to Nadi because all his folders were there. At around 11:30pm one of the preachers leaving nearby came to me and told me that my father might be involved in a car accident,” he said.

“I called the Police to ask them about the accident and they asked me to give some description and unfortunately the man they saw lying there was my father.

“We will miss him for his hard work,” Mr Naicker tearfully said.

His father was believed to have been heading towards his relatives place at Navo in Nadi when he alledgedly tried to cross the road and  he was hit by a passing vehicle.

Police said he died on the spot after he was thrown about 20 metres from where the vehicle hit him.

A post mortem is expected to be conducted tomorrow.
