The Lailanie Burnes captained Nadi Blazers rugby team received a timely boost from their sponsors, Radisson Blu Resort, at Port Denarau in Nadi yesterday.

The Nadi-based club is looking forward to make their debut in the 16 – team Crest Na Iri Women’s trophy at the 2014 Bayleys Coral Coast 7s at the Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka which kicks off today.

Radisson Blu hotel manager Paul Halford said it was part of social commitment to be associated with women sporting teams.

“At Radisson we are always trying to go big and support the community especially with the women’s rugby team,” Halford said.

“This is the way we do it and there is no other better way to show our support.”

Team coach Trevor Cleary thanked the resort for their gesture in supplying their travelling uniforms.

“The club is thankful and we acknowledge our major sponsors Radisson Blu, for their contribution and other sponsors Pacific Tourist Store and Selva Travel and Tours,” Cleary said.

“This will be our third biggest tournament so far and this gesture is a blessing. The club was established last year and it is Nadi’s frontier Women’s Rugby Union 15’s and 7’s club.

“This team is pioneering the way for the development of the sport in the western region at a local, provincial and national level.

“We have a firm belief in discipline, good sportsmanship and developing our players both on and off the field to enable them to be respectable, upstanding members of the community.”

The Blazers is drawn alongside USA Women’s, Aussie Pearls, and Lautoka. .

Clearly said the team represented the western division at the first ever, East vs West tournament in Rakiraki and featured in the 2014 Fiji Bitter Marist 7s, and Nawaka 7s.

Meanwhile, the side will depart on Monday to be part of the Women’s International 7s tournament in New Caledonia on the November 18 – 19.

The side takes on Lautoka in their first encounter at 8.40am and face USA Women at 5.20pm.
