Athletics Fiji works towards their development goals to be a number one track and field nation in the region.

The sporting federation has started with the Kids Athletics Course which was officially opened by the Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou yesterday.

The programme has been funded by the Australian Sports Outreach Programme through the Fiji Council of Disable Persons and implemented by Athletics Fiji.

Participants in the course include teachers, coaches from the Special Schools in the Central Division.

Tuitubou believes sports is an excellent way of equipping youths with the right skills, mindsets and values for a world of continuous and dynamic change no matter what physical status they are in.

“Through participation in sports our youths learn important values such as honesty, teamwork, fair play, respect, adherence to rules, discipline, perseverance, resilience and a strong sense of purpose,

“ Sports also teach young people how to deal with competition, how to cope with both winning and losing and much more, the ability to take defeat in their side to reflect and improve for the next round and to have the courage to try again and not skills that can be easily learnt in the classroom,” Tuitubou said.

Tuitubou also stated that if a sporting organisation wants to create and open up more opportunities for the participants then they need a much stronger sense of common purpose amongst all who are involved in sports for disabled people.

“We need to find a way of bringing the system together because cohesion is vital for opening up two key areas of potential funding and investment and attract development offers from those who are experts abroad,” he said.

The Kids Athletics Course focuses on the basics which include running, throws and jumps. Meanwhile the new athletics season will open on Saturday by Assistant Minister for Sports Iliesa Delana.
