Matelita Drodrolagi, 54, scooped the top awards for the pottery and ceramic category during the Western Crafts Exhibition at Koroivolu Park in Nadi yesterday.

Mrs Drodrolagi said she was confident to win the category during the judging on Tuesday.

“I was very confident of  winning an award for this category and I am very happy with my work,” she said.

Mrs Drodrolagi had learned pottery-making at a young age and did not regret her decision of being a fulltime crafts women.

Mrs Drodrolagi, who has been part of the Fiji Arts Council, has now influenced her only child to be a part of craft making also.

“My 36-year-old daughter, Taina has also joined me in making pottery; before she was working at a hotel.

“I told her that she needed to know how to make pottery so if anything happened to me she would continue the legacy,” she said.

Mrs Drodrolagi, who had recently lost her husband, said that her craft had assisted them financially.

“I only attended primary school because I had been sickly and could not finish my secondary school studies,” she said.

“I learned how to make pottery when I was very young; my mother and grandmother taught me,” she said.

The Nakabuta native from Nadroga did not imagine she would be travelling around the world to display her craft.

Mrs Drodrolagi had applied and was accepted by the Fiji Arts Council during a visit to their village in 2002. The Pottery and Ceramic winner is now determined to involve a group from the village to sell their crafts at hotel industries.
